At least halftime enrollment (6 hours for undergraduate) is required to receive a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan.
The annual limit cannot exceed UNT Cost of Attendance minus the other financial aid you receive. As of Fall 2026, the Parent PLUS Loan has an annual maximum limit of $20,000 per year per dependent student and a lifetime limit of $65,000 per dependent student. The parent borrower must complete the following steps to apply for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan (after the student has submitted the FAFSA):
- Complete a Direct PLUS Loan Request at Apply for a Direct PLUS Loan as a Parent | Federal Student Aid.
- Complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at MPN for Parents | Federal Student Aid.
In some circumstances, parent borrowers may be required to complete PLUS Credit Counseling. Details regarding Federal Direct Loan repayment plans can be found at Repayment Plans | Federal Student Aid.
