How to apply

Eligible candidates are identified through their Admissions file and will be encouraged to complete the General Academic Scholarship application.  Students must complete the 2012-13 General Academic Scholarship application online to be further considered for the Terry Scholarship.

After completing the General Academic Scholarship application, students may be requested to submit additional documentation for the Terry Scholarship application process.

Priority Dates

Students must complete the General Academic Scholarship application by January 15, 2012 to be considered.

Description

Howard and Nancy Terry are longtime residents of Houston, where Mr. Terry has been successful in a variety of businesses, ranging from banking to oil and gas.

In 1986, the Terry family decided to help young people to help themselves by setting up an educational foundation. Mr. Terry had always been grateful for the financial assistance that enabled him to go to college, so they decided to dedicate their time and resources to giving future generations of young people in Texas this same opportunity.

The Terry Foundation provides four-year scholarships for Texas resident students attending University of North Texas and several other Universities in the state of Texas. Terry Scholars are selected from a highly competitive applicant pool of incoming freshmen who demonstrate exceptional leadership, character, and scholastic ability. Current (continuing) and incoming transfer University of North Texas students are not eligible to be considered for the Terry Foundation Scholarship.
Students must be active in a UNT program to be considered this award.  Students active in a
UNT Dallas program should contact UNT Dallas for scholarship opportunites.

Amount

Terry Scholar award amounts are determined annually based on the cost of attendance at UNT, including tuition, fees, books, on-campus room and board and miscellaneous expenses.

The actual amount of the award will vary for each scholar depending on other scholarshipA scholarship is a form of financial aid given to students to help pay for their education. Most scholarships are restricted to paying all or part of tuition expenses, though some scholarships also cover room and board. Scholarships are a form of gift aid and do not have to be repaid. Many scholarships are restricted to students in specific courses of study or with academic, athletic, or artistic talent. awards and the ability of the scholar's family to contribute to the cost of college.

The Terry Foundation Board of Directors will determine awards beyond the first year (renewal awards) for Terry Scholars meeting the required continuing scholarship criteria. Awards average $46,000 over a four-year period.

Eligibility

First Year Scholar Qualifications

To be considered for the scholarshipA scholarship is a form of financial aid given to students to help pay for their education. Most scholarships are restricted to paying all or part of tuition expenses, though some scholarships also cover room and board. Scholarships are a form of gift aid and do not have to be repaid. Many scholarships are restricted to students in specific courses of study or with academic, athletic, or artistic talent., you must:

  • have a record of leadership in school and community
  • have financial needThe difference between the COA and the EFC is the student's financial need - the gap between the cost of attending the school and the student's resources. The financial aid package is based on the amount of financial need. The process of determining a student's need is known as need analysis. as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • show strong academic abilities, as evidenced by grades, class rank, and ACT or SAT scores
  • be a 2012 graduate from a Texas high school or Texas home-school
  • be admitted to the University of North Texas as a full-time student for 2012-2013
  • reside on campus for the first year at the University of North Texas
  • be unmarried and without children
  • be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States

Continuing Scholar Criteria

To continue receiving these scholarships each year, you must meet the following renewal criteria:

  • maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (most Terry Scholars maintain cumulative GPAs over 3.0)
  • maintain full-time student status
  • annually complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • remain unmarried and without children
  • write an acceptable, annual, self-evaluation letter
  • attend all functions sponsored by the Terry Foundation (usually 3 per year)
  • comply with the rules prescribed by the University and the Foundation Board of Directors

Additional Information

Only 32 candidates will be nominated by the University of North Texas (UNT) annually. The nominees’ applications will be forwarded to the foundation for review and selection. On-campus leadership opportunities

The successful UNT Terry Scholar will be prepared to be actively involved with campus activities. A special UNT student organization for Terry Scholars will offer recipients the opportunity to develop a community service agenda and mentor incoming scholars. Scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in the UNT Honors College.
